UPVC – Danger to the Environment or Saviour of Rapidly Tightening Wallets?
Rigid or ‘unplasticised’ polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) is a type of PVC that, like its name suggests, does not go through the plasticisation process. This makes it stronger and more durable than standard PVC. It is often used as a low maintenance building material and is especially popular for making patio french doors. There are environmental concerns over the use of uPVC in building. This primarily concerns the plasticisers and toxic emissions generated in both manufacturing and disposing of uPVC. Also, there is concern that if there is a house fire, the burning uPVC can release carcinogenic fumes into the atmosphere which are not just bad for the environment but also extremely toxic if inhaled. Despite these worries, uPVC patio back doors and upvc french doors continue to grow in popularity. Many people seem to be of the view that the lower cost and higher durability and lifespan far outweigh the possible negatives of uPVC production.
